  12. How to use the help system
  13. Whenever you are using a dialog box, and you want instructions
  14. on how to proceed, press ^rF1^r. When you've got a menu pulled
  15. down, you can move the highlight to any item and press ^rF1^r for
  16. help on that item.

  18.  ^r F1=Help ^r at the right side of the menu bar.
  19.  For help on a menu, click the menubar to drop it
  20.  down, then click the ^r F1=Help ^r.
  21. When you are first getting familiar with a Utility, you will
  22. find it helpful to select the ^b[Topics]^b button at the bottom of
  23. any page of help. It displays a list of topics, at least
  24. one of which provides background and introductory material.

  83. Keep an eye on the bottom line of each screen. This provides
  84. the short-version description of each menu item or the summary
  85. instructions for a dialog box.
  86. Also, the bottom line often displays a set of shortcuts for
  87. the most often-needed menu functions.
  88. DEFRAG provides a set of high-powered command-line switches
  89. to get things done from a batch file or to simplify
  90. life at the DOS prompt. For help with command-line
  91. switches and options, you may use ^uUtiltyName /?^u. For instance,
  92. ^rFORMAT /?^r^C11
  93. In this online help, we'll use the following conventions:
  94.   ^rkey^r
  95.  A single key such as ^r^C18^r or ^rHome^r or ^rspacebar^r. 
  96.  Press it and release it.
  97.   ^rshift^r+^rkey^r
  98.  A "keychord."  Press ^rshift^r and while still
  99.  holding it down, press ^rkey^r.  Release both.
  100.   ^rAlt^r+^rkey1^r ^rkey2^r Press ^rAlt^r and while still holding it, press
  101.  ^rkey1^r.  Now you press ^rkey2^r (with or without
  102.  releasing ^rAlt^r first).  Alt-shifted keys are
  103.  used to accelerate menu selections.
  104.   ^rClick^r
  105.      Press and release either mouse button.
  106.   ^rClick Right^r
  107.  ^rClick^r a specific mouse button. Rarely used;
  108.  normally both buttons work the same.

  110.  Press a button and while keeping it pressed,

  158. Use ^r^C18^r and ^r^C19^r, ^rHome^r and ^rEnd^r to move the selection bar in the
  159. drive list. All your DOS-recognized drives, including
  160. diskette drives and DOS partitions are listed. Network drives
  161. are not listed
  162. DEFRAG cannot optimize network drives.
  163. Press ^rEnter^r to select the highlighted drive for optimization,
  164. or press ^rEsc^r to back out of this dialog.
  165. Before DEFRAG begins optimizing, it will analyze the drive
  166. and make a recommendation as to the best optimization method.
  167. At that time, you may choose to modify the various 
  168. configuration settings before optimizing.
  169. This dialog lets you select one of two optimization methods. 
  170. Use ^r^C18^r and ^r^C19^r to move the cursor. Press the ^rspacebar^r to 
  171. select the desired method. Press ^rEnter^r when done, or ^rEsc^r to 
  172. cancel.
  173.  ^uFull Optimization^u: Best performance gain; takes the longest
  174.  amount of time to run.
  175.  Command line switch: ^bDEFRAG /F^b ("Full optimization")
  176.  ^C07 Moves directories to the front of the disk
  177.  ^C07 Unfragments all files
  178.  ^C07 Moves all gaps to the end of the disk
  179.  ^uUnfragment Files Only^u: Very fast to run.
  180.  Command line switch: ^bDEFRAG /U^b
  181.  ^C07 Does not optimize directory placement
  182.  ^C07 Leaves unfilled gaps around the disk
  183. This dialog lets you choose a filename sorting order. When
  184. you optimize with the Full Optimization Method or with the
  185. File Sort option (see ^rAlt^r+^rO^r ^rM^r), all files in all directories
  186. are sorted to this criterion.
  187.  Note: File sorting DOES NOT affect the physical positioning
  188.  of the file's data on the disk. 
  189. To select a ^bSort Criterion^b, press one of the hotkeys ^rU^r,^rN^r,^rE^r,^rD^r,
  190. or ^rS^r OR use ^r^C18^r and ^r^C19^r and press ^rspacebar^r. Move down to the
  191. ^bSort Order^b box and choose Ascending or Descending. Press
  192. ^rEnter^r to OK your choices or ^rEsc^r to cancel.
  193.  Note: You can chose a sort order from the DOS command line:
  194.  DEFRAG ^b/SN^b by Name A-to-Z
  195.  DEFRAG ^b/SN-^b by Name, Z-to-A
  196.  DEFRAG ^b/SE^b by Extension A-to-Z
  197.  DEFRAG ^b/SE-^b by Extension, Z-to-A
  198.  DEFRAG ^b/SD^b oldest-to-newest
  199.  DEFRAG ^b/SD-^b newest-to-oldest
  200.  DEFRAG ^b/SS^b smallest-to-largest
  201.  DEFRAG ^b/SN-^b largest-to-smallest
  202. This screen identifies all of the characters which may appear
  203. on the disk map. Press ^rEnter^r when you are finished looking at
  204. Select the Quit! menu (or press ^rAlt^r+^rX^r) when you are finished
  205. using DEFRAG. 
  206. After analyzing the currently-selected drive, DEFRAG
  207. displays the recommended optimization method.  If no
  208. optimization is necessary, DEFRAG will indicate so.
  209. If an optimization is necessary, it will be one of the 
  210. following:
  211.  ^uFull Optimization^u:  Best speed improvement; longest
  212.  amount of time to run:
  213.  Moves directories to the front
  214.  Unfragments all files
  215.  Moves all gaps to the end
  216.  ^uUnfragment Files^u:  Very fast to run; does not compress
  217.  empty space (leaves gaps).
  218. You can pick a different method by pressing ^rEsc^r, then picking
  219. ^uOptimization Method
  220. .^u from the ^uOptimize^u Menu (^rAlt^r+^rO^r ^rO^r).
  221. To immediately start optimizing with the suggested method,
  222. highlight the ^b[Optimize]^b button and press ^rEnter^r.
  223. The ^b[Configure]^b button (or press ^rEsc^r here) pulls down the
  224. ^uOptimize^u menu and lets you pick such options as sorting your
  225. directories and files. If you want to use any of these 
  226. options, highlight the ^b[Configure]^b button and press ^rEnter^r. 
  227. Later, use ^rAlt^r+^rB^r to begin optimizing.
